STEPHANE LEVIN is a scientific explorer who has often put himself on the line for medical research, experiments and trials of space
technologies in extreme conditions. A member of the French explorers‟ society and an accomplished conference speaker, author, photographer and filmmaker, he is a familiar public figure renowned
in the world of science and engineering for his scientific expeditions and his involvement in outreach initiatives to promote sustainable development.
Born in Cameroon, STEPHANE LEVIN grew up on a coffee plantation where the closeness of the exotic natural environment developed his
sense of adventure very young. From 1986 to 2001, he travelled the world as a cruise manager and creator of special tourist circuits in the Mediterranean, Africa, Polynesia, Asia, the Caribbean,
the Amazon and the Arctic.
In May 2001, he completed an unassisted solo raid of 450 km by ski and sled across the polar ice to the magnetic North Pole (80°N-106°W). From this experience emerged the desire to live a novel
adventure: a winter alone in the extreme conditions of the far north of the Canadian Arctic. Stéphane Lévin spent 18 months preparing physically and psychologically for this truly astounding
human exploit that would push his mind and body to their limits.
Determined that his experience should serve a meaningful purpose for science, STEPHANE LEVIN exposed his body to extreme survival
conditions, withstanding the effects of the cold and dark on his vision and sleep patterns, and following a specific diet. The expedition was followed by doctors specializing in stress
management, sleep, vision and nutrition.
On his return, STEPHANE LEVIN was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Toulouse and the A d‟Or prize at the 15th raid and adventure
festival in Les Angles, France. His award-winning account of the adventure, Seul dans la nuit polaire (Alone in the polar night), inaugurated the French explorers‟ society collection. In his own
words, “after hibernating like a bear, I gradually „clawed‟ my way back to civilization…”
Two doctoral medical theses were based on experiments performed on the explorer during his polar night expedition, one on sleep and the other on stress.
From February to May 2005, he was the photographer for the WISE bedrest study to simulate long-duration spaceflight, co-organized by the European (ESA), French (CNES), Canadian (CSA) and U.S.
(NASA) space agencies.
For Mission Nanook 2005-2006, he compiled a photo journal in the Arctic on the impacts of global warming on the Inuit, sea ice and polar bears.
In 2005, STEPHANE LEVIN was the first French explorer to create an exceptional educational programme geared towards observing and
preserving the planet, on the theme of global warming. Called Voyageurs des Sciences (Science Travellers), this programme to stimulate interest in science subjects leveraged the full spectrum of
systems supporting space research and its everyday applications. From 2006 to 2008, he took pupils on three expeditions in the Arctic, the Sahara Desert and the Amazon Forest in French Guiana.
Three books and three films recounted their adventures. Stéphane Lévin‟s latest film, Voyageurs des Fleuves (River Travellers), won a prize at the 2009 Paris international science film
festival.
STEPHANE LEVIN is also a consultant for firms in the space industry.
As a first-hand observer of climate change and its impact on our planet, Stéphane Lévin‟s many missions around the world have shown how space technologies are helping us to observe, understand
and protect our planet.
