Il était auparavant Partner et Directeur de la Recherche Economique et de la Stratégie d’Exane-BNP Paribas (1999-2008).
Antérieurement, il était Adjoint au Chef économiste de BNP PARIBAS (1995-1999), senior économiste à la Banque de France et Consultant au FMI (1986-1995).
Jean Pierre Petit est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages, « La finance, autrement » (Dalloz, 2005), « La Bourse, rupture et renouveau » (Odile Jacob, 2003) « Economie internationale : la place des banques », (Dunod 1999), « Les privatisations » (en collaboration, Montchrestien,1998) , « Echanges et finance internationale, les enjeux » et « Echanges et finance internationale, les acteurs » (1997, revue Banque éditeur), Il a participé aussi à plusieurs ouvrages collectifs (Repenser la planète finance Eyrolles 2009, La Chinamérique, Eyrolles, 2010)
JEAN PIERRE PETIT est ou a été chroniqueur au Monde, Figaro, l’Expansion, l’Agefi, Revue Banque et Investir. Il intervient aussi assez régulièrement à BFM Business, B Smart, Boursorama.

Between 2002 and 2007, JEAN PIERRE PETIT was elected each year as best market economist at the Grands Prix for Financial Analysis
organized by Extel-Agefi in France (with a vote of more than 700 institutional investors).
His work "The Stock Exchange, rupture and renewal" received in 2004 the Grand Prix (Turgot) for the best book in financial economics of 2003. His book "La finance autre" also received in March
2006 the special Turgot prize. On this occasion, he also received an honorary prize for having achieved the first "Doublé" of the Turgot Prize.
